Afterall Launches New Writing Platform Featuring Southeast Asian Art Essays

publication · 2026-04-20

Afterall has introduced New Writing, an online platform derived from its workshop series, aimed at highlighting new voices in art writing. The platform includes essays focusing on Southeast Asian art, such as a piece by Lyra Garcellano, dated September 25, 2025, that explores the challenges faced by Southeast Asian artists from the Philippines. Additionally, an essay by Arianna Mercado, Dominic Zinampan, and Yuji de Torres examines the relationship between contemporary Philippine art and the National Democratic movement. On August 1, 2025, Hùng Dương interviews Nguyễn Trinh Thi about her 2015 essay film 'Letters from Panduranga'. Other essays on that date address Cambodia's art scene and a controversial photograph, with contributions from Wing Chan, Thanavi Chotpradit, and others. Afterall also releases the biannual Afterall Journal and the Exhibition Histories series.
