Afterall launches Issue 46 and book on Chiang Mai art festivals at NTU CCA Singapore
NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore hosted a launch event on 13 October 2018 for Afterall journal issue 46 'Reconstruction: Performance and Collective Action' and the book 'Artist-to-Artist: Independent Art Festivals in Chiang Mai 1992–98' from the Exhibition Histories series. Charles Esche, co-founding director of the Afterall Research Centre, presented on the organisation's 20-year history. Afterall journal editors discussed Southeast Asian artistic practices and cross-cultural narratives with the southern hemisphere. David Teh and David Morris introduced their edited volume, the first comprehensive survey of the Chiang Mai Social Installation festivals, which emerged from a regional network of artists' initiatives and independent spaces. The event included readings by Peter Sipeli and 1angrynative, and a jam session with Lee Wen, an artist featured in issue 46. The programme ran from 2:00 to 7:00 pm at Gillman Barracks. The event was supported by NTU CCA Singapore and Nanyang Technological University as part of their three-year partnership with Afterall, and was free and open to the public.
