Afterall Launches Chris Marker Book with Film Screenings at French Institute London

publication · 2026-04-22

Afterall celebrated the launch of its latest One Work series title, Chris Marker: La Jetée by Janet Harbord, with a special event at the French Institute in London on May 30, 2023. The event featured screenings of Marker's films La Jetée (1962) and Remembrance of Things to Come (2002), introduced by author Janet Harbord. La Jetée, composed almost entirely of black-and-white photographs, is a science-fiction story set in a post-apocalyptic future where humanity experiments with time travel. It is considered one of the greatest experimental films ever made. Remembrance of Things to Come is a documentary portrait of French photographer Denise Bellon and a reflection on the decades between 1935 and 1955. Following the screenings, drinks were served and copies of the book were available at a discounted price.
