Afterall Journal Issue 22 Marks Editorial Transition and New Partnership with UNIA in Seville

Afterall Journal Issue 22, published November 21, 2009, signals a major editorial restructuring. After eight years and seventeen issues, the journal ends its partnership with the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) in Los Angeles and begins a new collaboration with UNIA arteypensamiento in Seville. The issue features texts on artists Sheela Gowda, Jos de Gruyter and Harald Thys, and the group Art Club 2000, alongside essays on the New Orleans biennial, São Paulo biennials of the 1970s, and Nam June Paik's Zen for Film. The editorial team—Mark Lewis, Charles Esche, and Thomas Lawson—reflect on the journal's evolution since 1999, noting the productive tension between pictorial and contextual approaches. A new editor, Nuria Enguita Mayo, has been appointed from Seville. Meanwhile, a separate Los Angeles venture, East of Borneo, will launch in early 2010 with support from the Getty Foundation and the Andy Warhol Foundation, combining a contemporary art magazine with a multimedia archive.
