Afterall Journal Absorbs Antwerp's AS Magazine in New Partnership
Afterall Journal's 16th issue, published November 1, 2007, marks the first produced under a new partnership absorbing the quarterly visual culture journal AS (formerly Andere Sinema) from MuHKA, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Antwerp. AS was founded in 1978 by politically engaged film amateurs and evolved from cinephilia to cover video art, computer art, and internet culture before shifting to contemporary art. In 2003, AS and its parent Center for Visual Culture were incorporated into MuHKA. The merger ends AS as an autonomous publication but preserves its critical legacy within Afterall. The issue features work by German filmmaker Ulrike Ottinger alongside Christopher Williams, Yto Barrada, Gillian Carnegie, Palle Nielsen, and Chris Gilbert, with essays by Jeff Wall and Anthony Huberman. Editors Pablo Lafuente and Dieter Roelstraete frame the merger as a continuation of Afterall's tradition of open-minded criticism and intellectual rigor.
