Afterall Issue 5 Explores Art's Expanded Boundaries

publication · 2026-04-22

In June 2002, the fifth edition of Afterall Journal, edited by Charles Esche and Thomas Lawson, delves into the intersection of visual art with theatre, film, television, and politics. It spotlights five artists: Pavel Althamer, Anri Sala, Chris Petit, Barbara Kruger, and Mary Heilmann, each creating their own unique connections. Althamer's work merges audiences and actors, promoting live performance, while Sala's video pieces, once for TV, now thrive in galleries due to dwindling non-commercial broadcasts since the 1980s. Petit is just beginning to explore art after focusing on personal documentaries for television. Kruger blends art and politics over 25 years, and Heilmann critiques bourgeois aesthetics. This issue also revisits Raymond Williams’ insights on TV realism. It's the last London-only edition; future issues will be jointly published with Central Saint Martins and CalArts, featuring an expanded editorial team and new US office support. Funding from the Arts Council of England will kick in next time.
