Afterall Issue 16 Launch and Ulrike Ottinger Film Screening at REDCAT

Afterall hosted the launch of its 16th issue at REDCAT in Los Angeles on May 31, 2023, followed by a screening of Ulrike Ottinger's 1978 cult feminist pirate film 'Madame X: An Absolute Ruler.' The film follows the harsh beauty Madame X, who recruits women—including a housewife, a diva, a psychologist, a 'native' beauty, and an artist played by Yvonne Rainer—to abandon their comfortable lives for adventure on the China seas aboard her ship, Orlando. Their utopian quest unravels as they replicate the power dynamics of the outside world. Tickets were priced at $9 general, $7 for students, and $4 for CalArts affiliates. The event began with a reception at 7:45 pm and the film at 8:30 pm.
