Afterall ArtSchool Podcasts Explore Pedagogy and Decolonial Practice

exhibition · 2026-04-22

Taking Ivan Illich's 1971 book 'Deschooling Society' as a starting point, the exhibition 'THE EDUCATIONAL WEB' was held at the Kunstverein in Hamburg from 1 April to 6 August 2023. It brought together eight alternative art schools and educational organizations. As part of the project, Afterall ArtSchool produced a series of podcast episodes released on 16 January 2024. The podcasts feature conversations with practitioners including Johanna Palmeyro (founder of Movimiento Justicia Museal), artist Zach Blas, the collective A Particular Reality, KUNCI Study Forum & Collective from Yogyakarta, and writer Rinaldo Walcott. Topics range from knowledge and unlearning in museological practice to anti-racist arts education and the role of Black creativity in freedom movements. The discussions are structured around three strands: education as learning together, problematizing the decolonial institution, and studying in the shadows.
