Afterall and MASP Launch Decolonization Seminar Series

institutional · 2026-04-22

Afterall has partnered with the Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP) to explore the impact of colonial legacies on art, curation, and critical writing. The inaugural seminar, titled 'Art and Decolonization,' took place on October 18–19, 2018, and gathered theorists, curators, and artists from South America, Africa, the United States, and Europe. This event sought to reframe exhibitions and museum collections through decolonized and non-canonical lenses. Organized by Mark Lewis, André Mesquita, Adriano Pedrosa, and Caroline Woodley, along with Ana Bilbao and Yaiza Hernández Velázquez, it featured speakers such as Luciana Ballestrin and Candice Hopkins. This collaboration enhances MASP's 'Histórias' project, which emphasizes diverse narratives related to race, gender, and activism. The initiative includes a series of essays, with the first by Walter D. Mignolo, available in Portuguese on MASP's website.
