Afterall and Chimurenga Publish FESTAC ’77 Exhibition History

Afterall has launched the tenth installment of its Exhibition Histories series, collaborating with Chimurenga to spotlight the 1977 World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture (FESTAC) held in Lagos. This volume showcases a unique array of previously unpublished photographs, archival documents, interviews, and contemporary artwork. Noteworthy contributors include Wole Soyinka, Léopold Sédar Senghor, and Miriam Makeba, alongside writers such as Akin Adesokan and Harmony Holiday. Released in 2019 through a partnership with Asia Art Archive and Bard College, this title has quickly sold out, marking a significant exploration of FESTAC’s global relevance and personal artistic experiences.
