After School Biennale: Curators Present First Edition
The first edition of Après l'école – Biennale artpress des jeunes artistes took place in Saint-Étienne from October 3 to November 22, 2020. Curators Étienne Hatt and Romain Mathieu present the event in a video. The biennial featured 36 artists recently graduated from French art schools, selected from 150 applications by 39 public art schools, most members of ANdÉA, without revealing the artists' schools. The exhibition spanned over 2,000 m² across the Musée d'art moderne et contemporain de Saint-Étienne Métropole (MAMC+) and the Cité du design. The selection committee and curators aimed to go beyond common practices, highlighting singular proposals opening new perspectives. The biennial emphasized materiality, sound, performance, and fleeting approaches, avoiding fixed categories.
