Afrofuturism Infuses AI Storytelling Program for Black Girls
Researchers have outlined a seven-weekend AI storytelling program for Black girls aged 10-12, described in an arXiv preprint (2608.16896v1). The initiative, built on Afrofuturism and Black feminist thought, employed AI-enabled counter-storytelling to encourage foundational AI literacies and future-oriented imagination. Activities ranged from brainstorming AI topics to designing characters and plots, culminating in collaborative group presentations. Analysis of learner artifacts showed that participants produced Afrofuturist narratives connected to their identities and daily lives while acquiring skills in prompt engineering, bias critique, and data privacy awareness. The study suggests that linking Afrofuturist storytelling with generative AI in informal settings can be a powerful way to engage Black girls.
