African Artists Underrepresented in Major European Exhibitions (2005-2015)

publication · 2026-05-05

A study analyzing African artist participation in Documenta, Manifesta, and the Venice Biennale from 2005 to 2015 reveals stark underrepresentation. Only 77 African artists were invited across 12 exhibitions, comprising 5.7% of 1,381 total participants. Recurrence was rare: just 9 African artists appeared more than once, with Marlene Dumas the only triple participant. Gender imbalance was pronounced (16 women, 51 men). South Africa led with 15 artists, followed by Egypt with 10. The average age at invitation was 46, with few artists under 30. Diaspora was limited: most African artists remained in the continent, and those abroad primarily moved to former colonial powers in Europe, not the US or Italy. The study highlights systemic exclusion, with Okwui Enwezor's 2015 Venice Biennale achieving 15.4% African participation—an outlier due to his African origin.
