AfDB Annual Meeting Opens Amid Aid Cuts and Ebola Threat

economy-finance · 2026-05-25

On Monday, the African Development Bank (AfDB) commenced its annual meeting in the Republic of Congo, focusing on the decline in international development assistance and an Ebola outbreak nearby. Last year, aid from the wealthiest countries plummeted by almost 25% to $174.3 billion, with the United States implementing significant cuts, including to the AfDB's concessional lending division. The bank identifies a $400 billion annual financing shortfall for Africa. AfDB President Sidi Ould Tah, who assumed his role in September 2022, advocates for a transformative approach to harness Africa's financial resources. He introduced the New African Financial Architecture for Development (NAFAD) to facilitate large-scale, rapid, and cost-effective financing from local sources. The bank emphasized the urgent need for long-term funding to address energy, food security, climate challenges, infrastructure, and employment for a growing population, while the Ebola crisis may impact meeting participation.
