Aesthetica's Listening Pitch Marks Five Years with New Sound-Focused Documentaries
The Listening Pitch, a documentary initiative launched by Aesthetica Film Festival in partnership with Audible, celebrates its fifth anniversary with premieres of three new films. Carin Leong's 'Untitled Fetal Heartbeat' uses Doppler ultrasound to translate biological processes into sound, while Roberto Duque's 'Voice Shift' follows trans femme individuals working with a vocal coach. Jiajing Zhao's 'Le Voyage dans la Lune' reimagines the soundtrack for Georges Méliès' 1902 silent film. These join a screening of Meghan McDonough's 'Old Lesbians', which chronicles older lesbian communities across the United States. Since 2020, the program has funded 10 films that treat audio as a primary narrative lens rather than mere support. Previous projects have premiered at SXSW and Sundance, with Ornella Mutoni's 'The Things We Don't Say' acquired by Guardian Documentaries. The initiative emphasizes experimentation with sound through observational work, experimental compositions, and immersive soundscapes. Cherie Federico, Director of Aesthetica, describes the program as a laboratory for documentary filmmaking that reveals stories through attentive listening. The anniversary event takes place on Saturday 8 November at City Screen in York, featuring screenings at 19:00 followed by a Q&A with filmmakers and DJ sets from 21:00. The program supports emerging talent by providing funding, mentorship, and platform access for underrepresented voices in documentary filmmaking.
