Aesop opens first Hainan store with algae-based bioplastic installations in cave-inspired design
Aesop has launched its inaugural store on Hainan Island, China, which is crafted to mimic an underwater cave within the Haitang Bay Duty Free Shopping Complex in Sanya. Developed by Aesop's internal design team, the store showcases two prominent ceiling oculi, with the larger one adorned with 2,000 aluminium panels treated with an algae-based bioplastic, designed by Jessie French of Other Matter. This eco-friendly material serves as a substitute for petrochemical surfaces. The interior features a circular pillar standing four metres tall, flowing entrance lines, a central display table with brass basins, and a personalization room, all illuminated by amber lighting. Marianne Lardilleux, Aesop's global retail design director, focuses on creating multi-sensory experiences. Recently, Aesop also opened new locations in Madrid and Leeds.
