Adriana Varejão's 'Por uma retórica canibal' exhibition at MAMAM Recife explores Brazilian baroque and colonial history

The exhibition 'por uma retórica canibal' by Adriana Varejão is currently on display at the Museu de Arte Moderna Aloísio Magalhães (MAMAM) in Recife. Curated by Luisa Duarte, it showcases 25 pieces created between 1992 and 2018, focusing on the influences of Brazilian baroque and colonial history, especially in the Northeast. Among the highlights is the video installation 'Transbarroco,' co-directed with Adriano Pedrosa, which features baroque church images set to an eclectic soundtrack. Notable works include 'Incisões a la fontana' (2000), 'Proposta para uma catequese – Parte 1 diptico: Morte por esquartejamento' (1993), and 'Ruínas de charque' (2000). This exhibition is part of MAMAM's 'Exposição Individual de Artistas Mulheres' initiative and is set to tour other Brazilian states later this year. The title draws inspiration from Oswald de Andrade's 1928 'Manifesto Antropófago.'
