Adrian Maben, director of Pink Floyd's Live at Pompeii, dies at 83

other · 2026-04-26

Adrian Maben, the Scottish-born filmmaker who created the iconic 1972 concert film Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii, has died in Ivry-sur-Seine, France, at age 83. Maben conceived the idea of filming the band performing without an audience in the ancient Roman amphitheater of Pompeii, transforming their music into visual architecture. The resulting film became a landmark in music cinema. In 2016, Maben returned to Pompeii for a David Gilmour concert and curated an exhibition about the original live event at the PAN museum in Naples, collaborating with local musician Rossella Marraffino. He also revisited the Solfatara di Pozzuoli, a volcanic site where he had filmed decades earlier. Maben's work is credited with permanently associating Pompeii's archaeological site with Pink Floyd's music.
