Adolescent Mural by Andrea Pazienza Discovered in Gargano
A previously unknown mural by Andrea Pazienza has been uncovered in his family's former holiday home in San Menaio, Gargano. The graffiti, executed with blue and red spray paint, was revealed by the current owners who purchased the property in 2003. It spans three walls and features a male figure holding a woman's head in his mouth, a female nude, and various slogans. Notably, it includes a caricature of Professor Sandro Visca, Pazienza's art teacher at the Liceo Artistico di Pescara, depicted with thick black mustache, wild eyes, and a profile resembling a fasces with a swastika. The mural dates to Pazienza's adolescence, around age 16, and shows early signs of his later style. Inscriptions include "Good bye," "W Fiorenzo," and a dialect phrase "Ca t pozzn accid." Pazienza went on to study at DAMS in Bologna, publishing his first comic "Le straordinarie avventure di Pentothal" in 1977 on Alter Alter. He co-founded Primo Carnera Editore and the magazine Cannibale in 1977 with Filippo Scòzzari, Stefano Tamburini, Massimo Mattioli, and Tanino Liberatore. From 1979 to 1981 he contributed to Il Male, and in 1980 co-founded Frigidaire with Vincenzo Sparagna, where the character Zanardi appeared. He also worked with Linus, Fizzer, Tango, and Zut. Pazienza died on June 16, 1988 in Montepulciano from a heroin overdose.
