Adobe revives five lost Bauhaus fonts after nearly a century
Adobe has rediscovered and digitized five historic typefaces from the Bauhaus school, originally designed by masters Xanti Schawinsky, Joost Schmidt, Carl Marx, Alfred Arndt, and Reinhold Rossig. The fonts were left incomplete when the Nazis forced the closure of the Bauhaus Dessau in 1932. The project, called 'The Hidden Treasures Bauhaus Dessau,' was led by renowned type designer Erik Spiekermann, who worked with an international team of typographers and design students to reconstruct the missing characters using probability calculations and Adobe Illustrator CC. Two of the five fonts are now available via Adobe Typekit, with the rest to follow. Simon Morris, Adobe's Senior Director of Campaign Marketing, stated the initiative aims to revive past creative projects and inspire new generations, following Adobe's previous collaboration with the Munch Museum to recreate Edvard Munch's brushes. Claudia Perren, Director of the Bauhaus Dessau, praised the project for demonstrating the enduring relevance of Bauhaus heritage.
