ADI Design Museum Milan Opens Public Officina Design Lounge

architecture-design · 2026-04-27

The ADI Design Museum – Compasso d’Oro in Milan has inaugurated Officina Design Lounge, a new public space comprising a bookshop and café accessible without a ticket. The museum itself opened on May 25 in a former industrial area between via Ceresio and via Bramante. The lounge is divided into Officina Design Shop, managed by Electa Editore, and Officina Design Cafè, run by CHIC Charming Italian Chef. Both spaces were designed by architect Marco Ferreri (Imperia, 1958), winner of the 2020 Compasso d’Oro career award. Ferreri used untreated copper supplied by KME Italia for the shelving, chosen for its antibacterial properties and ability to develop a patina over time. The seating consists of diverse donated chairs from ADI member companies, each labeled with production year, manufacturer, and designer. The lounge connects via an internal gallery that serves as a public passage between the two streets, featuring natural light. Ferreri emphasized the space's central location and the importance of light in creating an open-air feel.
