Adele Ghirri and Manuel Borja-Villel discuss Luigi Ghirri's legacy and Madrid retrospective
Adele Ghirri, the youngest daughter of photographer Luigi Ghirri, manages the Archivio Luigi Ghirri in Roncocesi, a hamlet of Reggio Emilia, Italy. The archive, housed in the farmhouse Ghirri bought before his death in 1992, holds vintage prints, photobooks, documents, and his library. Negatives and film materials are deposited at the Fototeca della Biblioteca Panizzi in Reggio Emilia. Adele took over from her mother Paola Borgonzoni in 2011 and runs the private, family-operated archive, which is accessible by appointment. She studied philosophy and earned a master's at Goldsmiths University of London. Manuel Borja-Villel, director of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, discusses the retrospective "Luigi Ghirri. La mappa e il territorio," which debuted in Essen, Germany, and will travel to the Jeu de Paume in Paris in 2019. The exhibition focuses on Ghirri's 1970s work, a period Borja-Villel considers his most experimental and innovative. Ghirri is described as an artist's artist, whose color photography offered a conceptual alternative to traditional black-and-white documentary style. The Reina Sofía does not hold any Ghirri works in its permanent collection. The exhibition runs until January 7, 2019.
