Adelaide Symphony Orchestra premieres Joe Chindamo's Concerto del Motore with conductor Stephanie Childress.

other · 2026-04-20

On April 17 and 18, the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra unveiled Joe Chindamo's Concerto del Motore during its In The Quiet concert series at Adelaide Town Hall. The 20-minute, three-movement piece was performed by principal clarinettist Dean Newcomb, with movements titled The First Revolution, Quiet in the Noise, and Asphalt Cathedral, all reflecting automotive themes. At just 26, Franco-British conductor Stephanie Childress made her Australian debut, delivering a compelling interpretation. The concert began with Aaron Copland's 1939 work Quiet City, featuring trumpet soloist David Khafagi and cor anglais player Peter Duggan. The latter part showcased Sergei Rachmaninov's Second Symphony, which premiered in 1908 following the composer’s initial symphonic setbacks. Chindamo worked closely with Newcomb on the concerto, furthering their collaboration with the ASO, which included the 2022 Ligeia Concerto for trombonist Colin Prichard. Newcomb's sixteenth year with the orchestra highlighted his profound musical insight, while the percussion section enhanced the cinematic essence of Chindamo's modern composition.
