Addison Copas: Thriving Under Design Limitations

Addison Copas, a graphic designer from Virginia, opts for limitations in his branding and wordmarks rather than the unrestricted creativity often found in art school. While studying type design with Seb McLauchlan at Kingston University, he transitioned from concept-driven projects to those grounded in research and technique, evaluating his work against measurable factors like weight, texture, and rhythm. Preferring traditional pencil and paper methods, Copas believes that sketching by hand enables faster and more flexible prototyping—one stroke can modify a curve that would take four vector points to alter. His designs, influenced by Czech typographer Oldřich Menhart, reflect classic, almost medieval aesthetics. He considers text type design a "severely confined art," shaped by cultural perceptions and human visual quirks, a limitation he enjoys.
