St. Raphael's Health & Wellbeing Center at Mayfield School in East Sussex, UK, has been completed by Adam Richards Architects. This 277 m² facility, which was finalized in 2024, stands as the first new construction globally to merge a cross-laminated timber (CLT) framework with a natural limestone brick exterior. It offers medical treatment, counseling, and educational services, creating a novel model for school healthcare in the UK. Commissioned in spring 2020 by Mayfield School, a historic Catholic boarding and day institution for over 350 girls, the design embodies the school's pastoral philosophy, "walk beside the girl," while addressing the increasing demand for quality health facilities. Sustainable elements include an air source heat pump, solar shading, mechanical ventilation with heat recovery, and low-carbon materials. The project team features quantity surveyor MGAC, M&E consultant Max Fordham, structural engineer Price & Myers, and main contractor BMR Construction Limited, with photography by Brotherton Lock and Lorenzo Zandri.
