Acquaquiglia del Pozzaro: A Hidden Underground Naples Site Opens to the Public
In the Sanità district of Naples, a historic underground site called Acquaquiglia del Pozzaro has been opened to the public by its owner, Vincenzo Galiero. The site, located at Via Fontanelle 106, is a 'basso' (ground-level dwelling) built in the 17th century, where Galiero's grandparents once processed cod and stockfish in the 1940s. After inheriting the property, Galiero, encouraged by his children and family stories, rediscovered a network of wells and tunnels. The name 'Acquaquiglia' means 'water of the shell,' referencing a 16th-century shell-shaped fountain that once stood in Piazza Santa Maria La Nova. The site currently features five wells that supplied water to residents and an 18th-century convent, now vanished. Artifacts found during excavations include ancient tools, small sculptures, and maiolica ceramics from various periods, dating back about 250 years. Galiero aims to contribute to the social and cultural revival of the Sanità district, one of Naples' most challenging neighborhoods. The site is also tied to local legends, such as the 'Munaciello' (a mischievous spirit associated with well workers, or 'pozzari') and the 'Bella 'Mbriana' (a benevolent house spirit), with objects at the entrance reflecting these tales. Future plans include continued excavations and hosting cultural events by reservation.
