ACPV Architects to Redesign Historic RAI Headquarters in Rome

ACPV ARCHITECTS, the Milan-based firm led by Antonio Citterio and Patricia Viel, has won the competition to redesign the historic RAI headquarters at Viale Mazzini 14 in Rome. The project, undertaken with engineering firm DBA PRO S.p.A., will renovate approximately 30,000 square meters of interior and exterior space. Key interventions include upgrading all facades for energy efficiency while preserving the original 1960s architectural language, creating a new garden on Via Podgora, refurbishing the internal courtyard and its surrounding gallery of Renaissance tapestries and sculptures from RAI's art collection, and improving workspaces with enhanced acoustic, lighting, and thermal comfort. The design follows principles of bioclimatic, sustainable, and biophilic architecture, targeting LEED and WELL certifications. The rooftop will be reinterpreted to integrate new technological and plant systems. Citterio emphasized maintaining the original compositional language while ensuring sustainability, and Viel noted the project rethinks a 1960s building with modern functional principles, contributing to urban regeneration. The studio's portfolio includes similar projects such as NOVE in Munich, Fastweb's new headquarters and Symbiosis Business District in Milan, Enel's headquarters renovation in Rome, and Banca Intesa's project in MilanSesto.
