Achille Perilli, Italian Abstract Art Pioneer, Dies at 94
Achille Perilli, renowned for his contributions to Italian abstraction, passed away at the age of 94 on October 16, 2021, in Orvieto. He was born in Rome in 1927 and studied literature under Lionello Venturi, writing a thesis focused on Giorgio de Chirico. In 1945, he was a co-founder of the Gruppo Arte Sociale (GAS) and contributed to the publications Ariele and La Fabbrica. In 1947, he played a pivotal role in founding Forma 1, Italy's first post-war abstract group. He opened the Libreria-Galleria Age d'Or in 1950 and organized "Arte astratta e concreta in Italia" in 1951. Perilli exhibited at the Venice Biennale and participated in five Rome Quadriennale events. His final exhibition took place in Milan from January to March 2021, with a posthumous exhibition set to open on October 20, 2021.
