Achille Calzi's Arts & Crafts Legacy Unveiled in Faenza Exhibition
The MIC (Museo Internazionale delle Ceramiche) in Faenza presents a monographic exhibition on Achille Calzi (1873-1945), a key figure in the Italian Arts & Crafts movement. Curated by Ilaria Piazza, the show is the first to comprehensively explore Calzi's multifaceted output, spanning ceramics, painting, drawing, caricature, and graphic design. Born into a family of ceramists, Calzi worked across media, producing preparatory drawings, finished works, and paintings blending Liberty and Symbolist styles, with influences from Franz von Stuck and Odilon Redon. He also created caricatures for the satirical magazine "Bric à Brac" in 1913 and authored the first manual of Faenza's art history. During World War I, he produced daily cartoons for the "Bollettino di guerra" displayed under the town hall. Calzi directed the Pinacoteca, Museo Civico, and Scuola di Disegno e Plastica in Faenza, and was connected to artists like Pellizza da Volpedo, Arturo Martini, Gabriele D'Annunzio, and Giosuè Carducci. The exhibition is part of MIC's project to highlight local artistic figures, led by director Claudia Casali. It runs at MIC Faenza.
