ACE Mentor Chicago and Human Scale Complete Community Garden in Pilsen

High school students in Chicago's Pilsen area transformed the La Huerta Roots and Rays community garden as part of ACE Mentor Chicago's Design/Build Program, which began in May with input from the community. This initiative, in partnership with NeighborSpace and Human Scale, featured adaptable gathering areas, seating options, and weather protection. The construction spanned two weeks in July, during which students collaborated with industry professionals. The garden was inaugurated on July 31, showcasing a play structure, a toy shed, and a central pergola adorned with custom red metal floral panels. Additional features included a child-sized store, a semi-circular bench, and a mural by artist Mario Mena. This marks Human Scale's third garden project in Pilsen. ACE Mentor Chicago is currently seeking participants for its 2026–27 program.
