Accademia Tadini: A Hidden Gem in Lovere

cultural-heritage · 2026-05-04

The Accademia Tadini in Lovere, a museum founded by Count Luigi Tadini in 1828, houses a diverse collection including Jacopo Bellini's Madonna and Child from around 1448. Tadini, an Enlightenment-era collector, built a neoclassical palace overlooking Lake Iseo to display his holdings, which also include works by Paris Bordon, Jacopo Palma il Giovane, Bernardino Campi, and the Vivarini brothers. After his son Faustino's tragic death, Tadini commissioned Canova to create a funerary stele for the family chapel. The museum features a library of 7,000 volumes on philosophy, science, and poetry. Following Tadini's death in 1829, the collection grew through donations, notably Francesco Hayez's monumental Ecce Homo. The museum remains active as an academy of fine arts.
