Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma Opens Free Contemporary Art Gallery

institutional · 2026-04-26

The Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma (ABARoma) inaugurated a new free exhibition space, the Galleria Accademia Contemporanea, on April 10, 2024. Located in a neoclassical passage between Piazza del Ferro di Cavallo and the Passeggiata di Ripetta, the space underwent restoration starting in late 2023. Director Cecilia Casorati stated the goal is to reopen the academy to the city and reposition it in contemporary art discourse. The gallery will host temporary shows and installations, beginning with a 2016 work by Jannis Kounellis, a former student, featuring large easels. Casorati emphasized the space is free and open to all, aiming to collaborate with other Italian and international institutions.
