Accademia di Belle Arti di Napoli reopens renovated GAN gallery

The Accademia di Belle Arti di Napoli has reopened its GAN Galleria dell'Accademia with a completely renovated layout and display. Curators Federica De Rosa and Marco Di Capua, together with President Rosita Marchese and Director Renato Lori, inaugurated the reopening on April 6, 2022. The new installation, designed by architect Lucio Turchetta with visual design by Enrica D'Aguanno, features around 300 works including drawings, sculptures, paintings, photographs, and installations dating from the 17th to the 21st century. Many works underwent restoration by the Accademia's Scuola di Restauro. The gallery traces the history of Neapolitan art through chronological, thematic, and genre-based paths, rehabilitating entire periods such as the early 1900s and the 1930s. A new space for temporary exhibitions, Spazio Lea Vergine, has been added for debates and presentations. The museum's collection originated in 1891, was formalized by royal decree in 1895, and first opened on March 12, 1916, but closed due to the 1930 earthquake, facing periodic closures and rearrangements since.
