In the Mina Zayed port area of Abu Dhabi, former shipping warehouses have been repurposed into film studios, creative workshops, and trendy cafés. The 421 Arts Campus serves as an independent hub for emerging artists and creative talents from the UAE and surrounding regions. Its director, Faisal Al Hassan, emphasizes a philosophy that prioritizes diverse voices over hierarchical narratives, aiming to engage the community. Recently, the campus marked its 10th anniversary with a whimsical event titled "Block Barty," a playful nod to how Arabs pronounce "P." Aya, a vibrant artist in her 20s and part of the 421 team, noted that the name originated from a joke. Unlike the more prominent art institutions such as Louvre Abu Dhabi and the upcoming Guggenheim, 421 embraces a more intimate approach, fostering genuine relationships with artists. A journalist noted the familial atmosphere during a staff lunch, which elicited laughter from Gen Z members who humorously critiqued Al Hassan's frequent use of the term. The institution encourages open discussions across different generations and backgrounds about exhibitions, even inviting security personnel to share their insights while avoiding esoteric jargon.
