Abraham Cruzvillegas Named Artistic Director of Inaugural Bienal de Yucatán

Abraham Cruzvillegas has been appointed artistic director for the first Bienal de Yucatán, running from late November 2026 through February 2027. The biennial, founded by French collector and curator Catherine Petitgas, will center on language and feature local artists such as Mónica Mitre, Mitchell Urioste, and Melissa Gabriela (MeGa). Cruzvillegas also created a live performance artwork for Louis M. Martini Winery at Art Basel Miami Beach 2025, producing a wine label by mixing pigment with a wine bottle and collaging painted paper. His site-specific mural maps, 'Two Abstract Maps (An Alchemical Self Portrait),' 2024, are installed at the winery in Napa. The artist, who studied education instead of art school, was mentored by Gabriel Orozco and is a founding member of the gallery Kurimanzutto. He emphasizes learning through failure and context-driven research.
