Abidjan's Art Scene Rises from War's Ashes
Two years after Côte d'Ivoire's post-election conflict, critic Franck Hermann Ekra surveys Abidjan's burgeoning art scene. The city's cultural revival is marked by new spaces like the Fondation Donwahi (1,500 m², 500 m² exhibition space) and Galerie Cécile Fakhoury (600 m²), both in Cocody, offering residencies and exhibitions. Fakhoury's inaugural show paired veteran Frédéric Bruly Bouabré with emerging painter Aboudia, followed by digital artist Paul Sika, Senegalese Cheick Ndiaye, and Burkinabé Nestor Da. The foundation reopened with the Dokolo collection's photographic portrait history. The war saw the Musée des Civilisations looted, public statuary destroyed, and the Martyrs monument decapitated—documented by photographer François-Xavier Gbrè. Artists like Ernest Dükü, Ananias Léki Dago, and Jems Kokobi navigate local and international scenes. Dago's exhibition "L'Arpenteur d'Afrique" at Fondation Donwahi features series on Johannesburg, Bamako, and Nairobi, with a retrospective and workshop at Goethe Institute. Kokobi shows at Artzuid 2013 and Venice Biennale with works like "Passengers," a one-ton pirogue with four empty chairs. The scene lacks museum infrastructure, editorial support, and viable public art systems, but diaspora returns and corporate patronage offer hope.
