Abed Al Kadiri's 'Danse Macabre' at Mina Image Centre

Mina Image Centre presents 'Danse Macabre – From Urban Perils to Raving Revelry,' a multimedia exhibition by Abed Al Kadiri featuring works from 2020 to 2023. Opening February 8, 2024, the show includes six large canvases, a video animation, and two performances, exploring dance as a response to trauma and societal collapse in Lebanon. The project, an ambassador initiative by the Beirut Museum of Art (BeMA), draws on the medieval Danse Macabre tradition to examine the underground rave scene as a sanctuary. Collaborators include Victor van Wetten and Jad Atoui for an animated video and sound installation, and dancer Jimmy Bechara for a performance using Al Kadiri's mural. A publication designed by Lynne Zakhour features a conversation between the artist and Marc Mouarkech, with contributions from Juliana Khalaf Salhab, Clemence Cottard, Joanna Andraos, and George Tabatadze. A rave performance with Frequent Defect will be announced later. The exhibition addresses Lebanon's compounding crises: a stalled revolution, economic collapse, the pandemic, and the 2020 Beirut explosion.
