Aaron Garber-Maikovska's 'Lost Corner Lot Play' at Casa Corbellini-Wassermann

Aaron Garber-Maikovska (Washington, 1978) presents his second solo exhibition in Italy, 'Lost Corner Lot Play', at Massimo De Carlo's Milan venue, Casa Corbellini-Wassermann. The show runs from 2023 at the historic house designed by Portaluppi in the 1930s, acquired by the gallery in 2019. Garber-Maikovska's practice merges psychogeography, performance, and painting, translating Southern California landscapes into abstract compositions of bright colors, lines, and gradients. He uses the term 'distillato' to describe his process of observing, translating, and creating micro-universes on polyester panels or canvas with ink and oil-stick. The artist emerged in the early 2010s via Greene Exhibition in LA, joined Clearing Gallery in New York in 2017, and had his first Italian solo show at Massimo De Carlo's Palazzo Belgioioso in 2021. His work references Abstract Expressionism, particularly Pollock's action painting, and incorporates performative gestures called 'bumping'—somatic mappings performed in public spaces. The contrast between the vibrant, abstract paintings and the warm wood, green/gray/pink marbles, walnut burl boiserie, and gilded fireplaces of the bourgeois residence creates a dialogue without dissonance, as the color windows open domestic intimacy onto transfigured nature.
