Aalto Works in Finland Inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage
At its 48th session held in Busan, South Korea, from July 19 to 26, the World Heritage Committee officially recognized the Aalto Works—comprising 13 architectural sites designed by Alvar, Aino, and Elissa Aalto—as UNESCO World Heritage. This nomination, which was put forward by Finland's Ministry of Education and Culture in 2025, elevates Finland's UNESCO site count to eight. The sites, created between 1928 and 1988, showcase civic, community, and residential buildings throughout Finland, highlighting 20th-century Modernism. Notable locations in Helsinki include Aalto House and Finlandia Hall, while other significant sites encompass Paimio Sanatorium and Seinäjoki Civic Centre. Both Tommi Lindh and Helsinki Mayor Daniel Sazonov commended this achievement.
