A24's 'Mother Mary' transforms German castle barn into cinematic psychodrama setting

The new A24 psychodrama 'Mother Mary,' directed by David Lowery and starring Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel, extensively utilized a centuries-old barn at Germany's Burg Adendorf castle as a key filming location. Production designer Francesca Di Mottola transformed the 14m-tall barn into the somber workspace of costume designer Sam Anselm, played by Coel, by covering walls in canvas, dividing the space into zones, and adding a loft to create a claustrophobic, moody atmosphere. The barn's rustic wood beams and plank flooring became visual motifs, echoed in concert scenes filmed at an arena and soundstage, and recreated for a hotel room séance scene led by singer FKA Twigs. Additional filming occurred at Burg Müddersheim castle for exterior shots. Di Mottola's team researched real-life fashion figures like Valentino Garavani, John Galliano, and Daniel Roseberry, and analyzed concert footage of Taylor Swift, Madonna, Dua Lipa, and Lady Gaga to inform the design, which also accommodates original songs by Charli xcx, Jack Antonoff, and FKA Twigs. The film is set for limited US release on April 17, 2026, followed by nationwide and UK releases on April 24, 2026.
