A View of One's Own: Three Photographers Capture Rome at American Academy

exhibition · 2026-05-05

The American Academy in Rome presents 'A View of One's Own,' a group exhibition featuring photographers Esther Boise Van Deman (1862-1937), Georgina Masson (1912-1980), and Jeannette Montgomery Barron (1956). Curated by artistic director Peter Benson Miller, Lindsay Harris, and Angela Piga, the show opens October 13 and runs through November 27, 2016. Van Deman and Masson's works come from the Academy's Photographic Archive, while Montgomery Barron debuts a new series shot entirely on an iPhone. Known for her 1980s portraits of New York artists like Andy Warhol, Cindy Sherman, and Jean-Michel Basquiat, Montgomery Barron has lived part-time in Rome for over a decade. She describes the iPhone as the only camera that allowed her to shoot spontaneously and freely, capturing Rome's lateral, non-touristic character. The exhibition title references Virginia Woolf's essay 'A Room of One's Own.' Montgomery Barron, who was an artist-in-residence at the Academy in 2007, collaborated with Miller and Piga to create the show. She notes that being a foreigner in Rome helped her understand the city's true character. The exhibition includes works from the 1950s–60s by Masson, such as 'Palazzo Doria Pamphilj, Rome.'
