A Sonic Map of Alexandria: sound installation at Museo Novecento, Florence

At the Museo Novecento in Florence, until September 3, visitors can listen to sixteen audio tracks from the sound installation "A Sonic Map of Alexandria" by artists Julia Tieke and Berit Schuk. The work captures the sounds, voices, and rhythms of modern Alexandria, Egypt, recorded on the city's streets between autumn and winter 2012, nearly two years after the revolution that ended Hosni Mubarak's regime. Part of the Estate Fiorentina program directed by Tommaso Sacchi, the installation aims to bridge distances between Italy and Egypt through evocative sound narratives. The project, part of the larger Alexandria Street Project, explores relationships between people and spaces, creating an archive of voices and music that rewrites Egypt's social, political, and cultural history during a period of transition. The installation is a collaboration between Map of Creation, Museo Novecento, and Radio Papesse. Tracks are available in Arabic, English, and French, and members of Florence's Arab and Arabic-speaking community will introduce the sounds, contributing to the translation and identification of distinctive urban noises. The Middle Est/Voices&Sounds festival continues at Apriti Cinema! in Piazzale degli Uffizi with the Italian premiere of Babak Jalali's "Radio Dreams" on July 18 and a screening of "Pop Palestine. Salam Cuisine da Hebron a Jenin" on July 25.
