A. Smith Bowman Releases First Rye Whiskey in 16 Years
A. Smith Bowman, the oldest continuously operating distillery in Virginia and a sibling to Buffalo Trace, has unveiled its first rye whiskey in 16 years. Named Abraham Bowman Special Release #26, this offering is part of the Abraham Bowman Limited Edition Collection and draws inspiration from the 2010 release of the rye whiskey. In contrast to its nine-year-aged predecessor bottled at 90 proof, Special Release #26 is 11 years old (distilled in 2015 and aged in Warehouse A) and comes in at 110 proof. The mashbill remains undisclosed, as is customary with Buffalo Trace-related whiskeys. Master distiller David Bock noted that this release seeks to investigate new methods and enhance knowledge of rye mashbills. A lottery for purchasing will take place from May 4 to May 11, with bottles priced at $80, requiring in-person pickup at the distillery by May 31. Official tasting notes highlight flavors of vanilla, apricot, and orange zest, complemented by earthy notes and a spicy finish of black pepper and mint.
