A+A Cooren's Komorebi Lamps Filter Light Through Bamboo and Linen

exhibition · 2026-05-05

Design duo Aki+Arnaud Cooren (A+A Cooren) present 'Komorebi', a series of luminous sculptures at Carpenters Workshop Gallery in London. The exhibition extends their Ishigaki collection, inspired by freediving observations near Ishigaki Island where underwater light appears concentrated and shifting. Each piece features an upward-facing light source in a carbon-metallic base that directs illumination toward the ceiling, creating diffused shadows that mimic circular sunlight perception beneath water. Materials include bamboo stems, linen shades, and controlled pigments, referencing coral formations and suspended particles. Seven hand-crafted floor lamps in coral-derived tones are on view until May 30th, 2026. The works explore light as a spatial condition where shadow, reflection, and material interact.
