8th Lyon Biennale 'Expérience de la durée' Explores Time Through Art

festival-fair · 2026-04-23

The 8th Lyon Biennale, titled 'Expérience de la durée,' took place in Lyon from September 14 to December 31, 2005, under the curation of Nicolas Bourriaud and Jérôme Sans. This exhibition examined the concept of duration through various timed pieces, such as Andy Warhol's Sleep, and John Miller's decade-spanning photographs, as well as La Monte Young's Dream House, which highlighted transhistorical duration. Influences from Fluxus and minimalism were evident, with Riley's installation encouraging noise in a contemplative environment. Saâdane Afif contributed electric guitars that played repetitive chords. The event showcased op and kinetic art from artists like Ann Veronica Janssens, Martin Creed, Olafur Eliasson, and James Turrell, while Erwin Wurm's work critiqued participation and Agnès Thurnauer's paintings challenged the notion of art's longevity, featuring 43 artists and 70 events throughout the Rhône-Alpes region.
