8th Istanbul Biennale: Poetic Justice Amidst Global Tensions

The 8th Istanbul Biennale, held from September 20 to November 16, 2003, in Istanbul, Turkey, was curated by Dan Cameron with the theme 'Poetic Justice.' This event showcased 82 artists from 49 nations, aiming to bridge the gap between politically charged art that critiques globalization and aesthetic enjoyment. Among the standout pieces were Doris Salcedo's installation of stacked chairs, Monika Sosnowska's self-rolling corridor, and Bruno Peinado's suspended motorcycle in the Yerebatan Cistern. Jennifer Steinkamp's digital tree and Nalini Malani's video montage also gained attention. Tony Feher's blue adhesive at Hagia Sophia resembled stained glass, while the Antrepo dock featured video works, including Kutlug Ataman's portrayal of a Turkish Cypriot woman's childhood and Anri Sala's ghost game, highlighting Cameron's emphasis on emerging artists.
