other · 2026-04-28

On Tuesday, an 89-year-old man opened fire with a shotgun at a courthouse and a social security office in central Athens, injuring at least four individuals. The assailant concealed the weapon beneath his coat, first targeting an employee at the social security office before making his escape. Although police provided aid to the victim, the shooter managed to flee the scene. Surveillance footage from a nearby store captured him walking calmly across the street with a short-barreled shotgun. He subsequently fired shots on the ground floor of the courthouse, injuring multiple people. Authorities later recovered the shotgun. Stratis Dounias, head of the Athens Judicial Employees Union, noted that the man had fired inside an office within the court building.
