83 Artists Transform Piazza Vittorio Columns Against Urban Decay

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The exhibition 'Entasi' in Rome's Esquilino district uses art to combat urban decay by adorning the columns of Piazza Vittorio's porticos. Inspired by the architectural term 'entasi'—a slight swelling in a column's shaft that creates an optical illusion of height—the show is organized by Arco Di Gallieno, an association of local artists. From December 19, 2019, to January 9, 2020, 83 artists will install temporary works at the entasis point of each column, reimagining the historical practice of decorating church columns for religious events in a secular, contemporary context. The project aims to highlight the area's architectural heritage while addressing social degradation, including homelessness. The exhibition is held at the nearby Acquario Romano, where sketches of the projects are displayed.
