82nd Venice Film Festival lineup announced with 21 competition films
The 82nd Venice International Film Festival, running from August 27 to September 6, 2025, announced its full program. The opening film is Paolo Sorrentino's 'La Grazia' starring Toni Servillo and Anna Ferzetti. Alexander Payne will preside over the main competition jury, with Julia Ducournau heading Orizzonti and Charlotte Wells leading Opera Prima. Emanuela Fanelli will host both opening and closing ceremonies. The competition includes 21 films from directors such as Yorgos Lanthimos, Noah Baumbach, Kathryn Bigelow, Guillermo del Toro, Jim Jarmusch, Park Chan-wook, and Benny Safdie. Five Italian films compete: 'Duse' by Pietro Marcello, 'Elisa' by Leonardo Di Costanzo, 'Un film fatto per bene' by Franco Maresco, 'Sotto le nuvole' by Gianfranco Rosi, and Sorrentino's opener. Jane Campion will attend with her film school students. Werner Herzog will receive a recognition award. Four TV series debut: 'Un Prophète', 'Portobello', 'Etty', and 'Il Mostro'. The closing film is Cédric Jimenez's 'Chien 51'. The press conference opened with a tribute to the late critic Goffredo Fofi via an unfinished film by Franco Maresco. Artistic director Alberto Barbera was moved announcing Kaouther Ben Hania's film about a Gaza girl, which beat Jim Jarmusch's new work for a slot.
