8 Must-See Shows in New York During Armory Week

exhibition · 2026-05-04

During Armory Week 2019, New York hosted eight major exhibitions spanning from historical icons to contemporary Italian artists. At ISCP, Chiara Fumai's posthumous tribute features performances like The Book of Evil Spirits and a reading of Valerie Solanas' S.C.U.M. Manifesto. The New Museum presents Adelita Husni-Bey's first solo show in New York, Chiron, a site-specific installation addressing migration. The Brooklyn Museum mounts the largest U.S. Frida Kahlo exhibition in a decade, including garments and personal effects unearthed in 2004. The Met and El Museo del Barrio jointly celebrate Lucio Fontana: the Met Breuer and Fifth Avenue host the most extensive U.S. retrospective in 40 years, while El Museo del Barrio reconstructs his 1968 Spatial Environment from documenta 4. The Whitney Museum offers Andy Warhol: From A to B and Back Again, the first U.S. Warhol retrospective since 1989, with over 350 works. MoMA focuses on Joan Miró's Birth of the World (1925), surrounded by 60 works from the 1920s–1950s. The Guggenheim launches Implicit Tensions: Mapplethorpe Now, a year-long tribute beginning with works from its collection, including nudes, floral portraits, and S&M scenes, followed by a second installment on his contemporary influence.
